Mayoral contender moots Liverpool Waters enquiry

Mayoral candidate Liam Fogarty has demanded the government subject Peel Holding’s £5.5 billion waterfront project to a public enquiry if approved this week

Fogarty – who is a former BBC journalist and independent candidate running in Liverpool’s mayoral elections – has written to Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles over the controversial Chapman Taylor-designed scheme.

In the letter, he described the project as ‘mediocre and soulless’ and suggested the scheme, alongside its sister scheme in Wirral, ‘represents an out-dated model of global property development that was discredited once the credit crunch began to bite.’

He added: ‘Notions of building not just a “Dubai” but an “Abu Dhabi” on either side of the River Mersey are surely fanciful’.

Last week however, developer Peel Holdings said it was unafraid to ‘walk away’ from £5.5 billion redevelopment of Liverpool’s waterfront if the project goes to public inquiry.

Liverpool City Council’s planning committee is set to make a decision over the project tomorrow (6 March).

The scheme is recommended for approval despite criticism from DC CABE, UNESCO, Civic Voice and English Heritage.

UNESCO claimed the proposal would cause ‘irreversible damage’ to the city.

The £5.5billion redevelopment project includes plans for 9,000 homes, offices, shops, a cruise terminal, cultural buildings and restaurants, alongside a 55-storey tower.

  • Another Mayoral candidate Joe Anderson the current council leader has said World Heritage status is just a badge on the wall. You do have to admire his consistency for being one of Peels Poodles.
