Masdar Institute of Science and Technology by Foster + Partners

[FIRST LOOK] The AJ has been given a behind-the-scenes look at Foster + Partners’ Masdar city, the carbon-neutral, zero-waste development in Abu Dhabi

These pictures show the partially constructed student accommodation for post-graduates at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. Clad in locally-made, bespoke glass-reinforced concrete panels, the buildings will be the first to complete on the site and are expected to be finished by September.

Located 17km south-east of Abu Dhabi City, Masdar is a 6 million m² sustainable micro-city, designed by Foster + Partners with developer Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (ADFEC), wholly owned by the government of Abu Dhabi. Based on the principles of a walled city, yet acting as a high-tech global centre for renewable energy and environmental initiatives, the development is set to be zero carbon and zero waste.
