Make submits redesigned Croydon tower scheme
[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] Make has resubmitted plans for its mixed-use skyscraper development in east Croydon
The 53-storey residential tower will create almost 500 town-centre homes as well as shops and community facilities at the Cherry Orchard Road site.
The practice had originally drawn up plans for ‘a family’ four skyscrapers, including a 43-storey block, but those proposals were withdrawn from planning in 2009.
Since then Menta has been hammering out new plans with both council officials and people living in the local area.
Cara Bamford, from architect Make, said: “From the outset we wanted to match Croydon’s ambitions for itself and create an elegant landmark building that offers a lifestyle as totally removed from outdated concepts of ‘high rise’ living as possible.
‘Our building will host a genuine ‘vertical community’, with shared amenity spaces at all levels including roof gardens, games room, craft room and business centre, and rooms available for private hire for family celebrations and other events.’
Included within the latest scheme are plans to build a 165-bed four-star hotel and 6,600m of office space on the site.
The design team will have to wait until July to find out if planners have given the skyscraper - which will rival the BT Tower in height - the go-ahead.

Make unveils redesigned Croydon tower scheme
[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] Make has revealed its redesigned proposals for Cherry Orchard Road next to East Croydon station in south London
The practice’s original plan for four skyscrapers, which was withdrawn from planning last year and featured a 43-storey block, has been replaced by a ‘family of buildings’ including a 53-storey residential tower (AJ 30.09.10).
The new scheme, again for developer Menta, includes 700 homes, a 165-bed four-star boutique hotel, 6,000m2 of ‘start-up office’ space and ‘significant public realm’.
Last month East won the job to masterplan Mid-Croydon, the area between East Croydon and West Croydon stations.
