Make has won planning permission to replace the 1960s Taberner House in Croydon with more than 400 new homes and shops

The empty building - once home to Croydon Council - is set for demolition and will make way for a ‘sustainable’ development backed by Croydon Council Urban Regeneration Vehicle (CCURV), a partnership between Croydon Council and developers John Laing.
The practice, which celebrates its 10th Anniversary this week and has recently posted a 28 per cent rise in turnover, has drawn up plans for 420 apartments ranging from one to three bedroom properties.
The 32-storey scheme is one of more than 200 tall towers currently proposed for the capital - a state of affairs which is the subject of the AJ/Observers’ ongoing Skylines campaign.
David Patterson, lead project architect and partner at Make said: ‘Our hope is for Taberner House to be an important new asset for the Croydon community and the start of the regeneration process.’
Jayne McGivern, CCURV chair, said: ‘Make…has ensured that our proposals for the Taberner House sites have been designed sensitively, with a focus on high quality architecture and longevity for the benefit of the Croydon community.’
Jo Negrini, executive director of development and environment for Croydon Council, said: ‘This is a really exciting planning decision for Croydon… Taberner House was an iconic building, its tower forming part of the town’s skyline for the last few decades but no longer cost effective.
‘Last year the council replaced this and other outdated buildings with a much more efficient headquarters, freeing up this important site to meet housing demand.’
She added that the design will be in keeping with the future face of Croydon which is soon to be transformed with other major regeneration projects including the Westfield/Hammerson development of the Whitgift Centre, designed by Allies and Morrison.
The planned redevelopment works are set to begin in December this year.
