Make and AWW complete £33m East London university

A new £33million joint facility for the University of East London and Birkbeck University of London, designed by Make and delivered by AWW architects, will officially open tomorrow

The 8,600m² University Square Stratford scheme houses a range of departments from each university as well as a number of ‘highly flexible general teaching spaces’ and dedicated areas for law, performing arts, dance, music and information technology.

The building, which is close to the huge Westfield shopping centre in Stratford, east London, features 700m² of solar panels, three rooftop bat boxes and rainwater and has beend had a BREEAM excellent rating.

James Taylor, partner at Make, said: ‘The architecture is an expression of what the project has achieved - the bringing together of a whole host of different spaces, departments and functions that serve two universities in one coherent building.

‘The expressive form, granite external facades and concrete internal finishes work together to create a new landmark with a confident presence and a civic scale. The building will attract new students and give them an institution in which they can be proud of its quality and longevity.’
