Longest bench in the world gets green light

Plans to create an international tourist attraction in Littlehampton by building a record-breaking bench, have been given the go ahead

Arun’s District councils’ development control committee unanimously passed the project that will run for up to 483m along the seafront from the East Beach Café to Littlehampton’s Harbour Park.

Studio Weave initially worked with pupils from Connaught Junior School, taking inspiration from their idea of a ‘friendship bench’ for the final colourful design. The structure will be made up of thousands of colourful enamelled stainless steel bars that are both fade and corrosion resistant. Its design includes loops and twists and makes the overall length of the design around 650 metres.

The two existing public shelters will be replaced by open shelters with the bench twisting and looping within them.
