LDS bags planning for £150m Hammersmith town centre overhaul
Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands (LDS) has landed planning permission for its low-rise redevelopment of Hammersmith – more than a year after skyscraper plans by Sheppard Robson for the same site were abandoned
The high-profile King Street regeneration project was approved by local authority Hammersmith and Fulham Council’s planning committee on Tuesday night (12 November) and must now be ratified by the Mayor of London.
The 33,145m² LDS-designed scheme replaces Hammersmith’s town hall extension with a new cinema, public square, offices, retail and 196 homes.
Under the scheme, the ceremonial stone steps of the district’s Grade II-listed town will be reinstated to link up with the new public piazza and £5.25 million will be spent regenerating the surrounding area.
Practice director Alex Lifschutz said: ‘After several months’ consultation with the local council, community and stakeholders, we’re delighted that our plan for the regeneration of King Street has been approved.
‘We look forward to working with King Street Developments to turn the area into an attractive mixed-use neighbourhood, with a new public square and Cinema to complement the handsome, listed Town Hall. Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands is a local business and we are excited to revitalise this area of Hammersmith into a new cultural and leisure destination for those who live and work here.’
Hammersmith and Fulham Council leader Nicholas Botterill added: ‘We listened to residents and ditched the less popular elements of the previous scheme and I now believe we have a scheme that Hammersmith can be proud of.
‘It’s been hard work but we finally have a plan that will kick start the much needed regeneration of the west end of King Street. The developers can now get on with the important work of breathing new life into this rather rundown area.’
