KPF to redevelop 1970s towers in Vauxhall

KPF has been appointed to design two new skyscrapers to replace the 1975 Market Towers in Vauxhall, south London

The top-20 ranking AJ100 company has worked up plans for two mixed-use towers on the site of the 22-storey office building which will be unveiled as part of a public consultation next week.

Dubbed One Nine Elms, the residential-led scheme could be up to 40-storeys in height with approximately 70,000m² floor area. Nearby projects include Kerian Timberlake’s proposed new US Embassy building and residential projects by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and Rolfe Judd.

KPF is also working on a public realm strategy for the 0.7 hectare site which is part of the Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea Opportunity Area masterplan where up to 16,000 new homes and 25,000 new jobs are expected.

Plans to retrofit the skyscraper – completed in 1975 by architects GMW as part of an unrealised cluster of towers – were dismissed due to cost.

Comprising two adjoined towers finished in brown concrete and bronzed glazing, the building was designed as an administrative block for the adjoining New Covent Garden Market which is now planned for redevelopment by Foster + Partners and Neil Tomlinson Architects.

Market Towers’ podium originally featured a pub and is home to the Colosseum nightclub which was a popular haunt of garage music fans in the 1990s.

A detailed planning application is expected to be submitted to local authority Wandsworth Council later this year.

A public exhibition of the proposed scheme launches next week.
