KieranTimberlake wins US Embassy project
[EXCLUSIVE IMAGES + PLANS] KieranTimberlake has won the prestigious project to design the new US Embassy in London
The Philadelphia-based practice was selected ahead of two Pritzker-Prize winners - Richard Meier (Richard Meier & Partners) and Tom Mayne (Morphosis Architects) - plus Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. The firm’s ‘environmentally friendly’ scheme will be built in Nine Elms close to Battersea Power station.
US Ambassador Louis Susman said: ‘We feel the design concept put forward by Kieran Timberlake best meets the goal of creating a modern, welcoming, secure and efficient embassy for the 21st Century. It was also the most environmentally friendly of the four projects.’
The hunt for an architect to design the new embassy building - allegedly worth £325 million - was launched in November 2008. The US Embassy is to move south of the River Thames from its Eero Saarinen-designed building in Grosvenor Square (pictured below) which it has now sold to Qatari Diar.

This is not looking good at all for Battersea ore London.
So not inspiring and not bringing anything to the city or its immediate surroundings.
Very sad to see that an architecture as poor as this for a very important building.

Horrendous building. Truly horrendous landscaping. And what's with the Willy Wonka murals at ground level in the 4th pic ???

It's enormous compared to all the buildings around it. The American obsession with domination, expressed in architectural form.
