Kerching! Acme submits plans for new John Lewis store

Acme has submitted detailed plans for this John Lewis store in Leeds, part of Hammerson’s wider Victoria Gate retail-led scheme – formerly the Eastgate Quarters

Outline planning consent was won in July 2011 for the huge city centre project. Included in the development’s £130 million first phase are applications for an arcade block and a car park.

The practice won the detailed design work following a competition in March this year (AJ 01.03.2013).

The London-based practice has already worked on the wider masterplan for the £590 million Hammerson-backed project and in July 2011 won planning for a revised outline scheme - replacing a larger proposal drawn up by Farrells in 2006 (see below).

The application is expected to go before Leeds City Council’s Plans Panel in the autumn with work scheduled to start in spring 2014.

Victoria Gate’s Project Director, Joe Swindells, said: ‘We are confident that we have developed the best possible scheme to help put Leeds on the map as one of the UK’s top retail destinations.’
