Keppie reveals £40m Malaysian sports village

[First look + plans + project data] AJ100 practice Keppie has unveiled plans for a 13,000m² sports complex in Medini, Malaysia

The £40million project for the country’s national investment fund includes a Wembley-style football pitch and a ten-wicket international standard cricket oval with space for 20,000 spectators.

Planned to complete in 2016, the sports village also features an 18-court games hall, four squash courts, a gym, sports science department, changing facilities and administrative offices.

It will be located within the 930-hectare Medini development which is earmarked to eventually become the South East Asia country’s second largest city after the capital Kuala Lumpur.

The Glasgow-headquartered practice – shortlisted for this year’s AJ100 fastest growing practice award – won the detailed design contract after completing a conceptual study for the high-profile scheme.

David Ross, design director at Keppie, said:  ‘It has been a great project to work on and will be a fantastic resource for the new city.  The collaborative approach taken by the client and our local design team partners has been fantastic and the design is one which we are very proud of.’

He continued:  ‘The project is reflective of the ambitions of one of the world’s fastest growing economies and will play an important role in developing a sense of place, attracting and developing elite sports and balancing this with the promotion of community engagement and participation.’
