Kapoor and Balmond's Teeside project underway

Construction work has begun on Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond’s £2.7 million Temenos, the first in a range of public-art installations called the Tees Valley Giants

Measuring 110m in length and 50m in height, the design will be located at the north-eastern corner of Middlehaven Dock at Middlesbrough next to the Transporter Bridge.

Site-preparation work is currently underway, with concrete bases to support the structure to be installed. Much of the steel work – the project uses over 8km of steel cable and a total of 66 tonnes of steel – will be completed off site. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Temenos is funded by government initiative The Northern Way, Regional Development Agency One NorthEast, the Arts Council England, the Northern Rock Foundation, Middlesbrough Football Club and BioRegional Quintain.

The Tees Valley Giants is the largest public art initiative in the world – it will comprise of a series of five art installations by sculptor Anish Kapoor and structural designer Cecil Balmond, of Arup.

Sculptures will also be installed at Stockton, Hartlepool, Darlington and Redcar and Cleveland adding up to the biggest public art project anywhere in the world.

The William Alsop-designed Middlehaven Dock, the 32ha mixed-use regeneration project located adjacent to Middlesbrough town centre has now been renamed Riverside One. To see more, click here.
