Kapoor and Balmond complete Teesside 'giant'

Work has completed on Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond’s huge Temenos sculpture at the Middlehaven Dock redevelopment in Middlesbrough

The £2.7 million, 50m-tall landmark is the first of the Tees Valley Giants – a £15 million series of massive artworks.

Temenos is funded by government initiative The Northern Way, Regional Development Agency One NorthEast, the Arts Council England, the Northern Rock Foundation, Middlesbrough Football Club and BioRegional Quintain.

Kapoor recently made the headlines for another of his giant sculpture projects, the Orbit - a controversial prosposal for a 115m-tall viewing platform in the Olympic park.

  • dimensions -just under 50m high and almost 110m in length. The circular ring is 32m diameter. The elliptical ring is 28m by 16m.The mast is 45m tall
  • materials - 5.1 miles (8200m) of stainless steel cable was used. There are 64 long cables and 49 hooped cables held together by 3,136 cable clamps.
  • weight -156 tonnes
