The developer behind SPPARC Architecture’s Quill skyscraper, Investream has won a long legal fight to build the 31-storey project in Southwark, London
The Quill will house 500 student bedrooms on a site adjacent to the Shard at London Bridge.
Appeal Court judges ruled on Friday that the London Borough of Southwark had been right to grant planning permission to the contentious tower, reported sister title Construction News.
Adjoining landowner Threadneedle had launched a judicial review against both Southwark and communities and local government secretary Eric Pickles, who had decided against calling in the planning decision for review.
The High Court ruled in favour of the council and Pickles, and the Court of Appeal has now upheld this decision. It dismissed as irrelevant objection to the Quill’s height, given it will be only one third as tall as the 310 m Shard.
Drivers Jonas Deloitte partner Rory Joyce, planning consultant for the development, said: ‘At a time when we all recognise the pressing need for investment and regeneration, it is more important than ever that developers are able to get on with delivering high quality schemes like The Quill.’
An Investream spokesman said no decision had been made on when procurement or construction work would begin.
