Jestico + Whiles wins go-ahead for Southwark town hall overhaul
Jestico + Whiles has won planning for the conversion of Southwark town hall into 149 student flats
The 7,850m² scheme in Peckham Road, south London also includes a ‘contemporary sky lounge’ for students, gallery space, café and 12 artists studios.
Backed by Alumno Developments, the project will see the existing Theatre Peckham moved out of its soon-to-be-demolished home - a former community hall attached to the north wing of the town hall - and rehoused in a new 200-seat facility set within a new public piazza.
Catherine McKenzie, development manager of Alumno Developments said: ‘This project has involved extensive collaboration with the Council and community over the past year.
‘The design is of very high quality, which respects the historic Town Hall but also provides Theatre Peckham with a larger, modern facility which will enable them to consolidate all their operations into one building for the first time.’
Construction will begin this spring and the scheme is due to complete by the end of 2015.
