Jestico + Whiles submits Mossbourne Academy plans

[First look] Jestico + Whiles has submitted plans for an 800-pupil school near Well Street Common in Hackney, east London

The proposed Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy is planned as an offshoot of the highly successful Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners-designed Mossbourne Community Academy which opened in 2004.

The project, located a short distance from Mossbourne’s existing Hackney Downs base, includes new buildings and the conversion of a Grade II-listed Gothic hospital.

The 1865 building will feature the school’s library with its former chapel converted into a multi-functional drama space.

Jude Harris, associate director at Jestico + Whiles said: ‘We have worked together to design a building which is sympathetic to the site and its heritage status alongside the aspirations of Mossbourne Academy. We strongly believe it will provide an exceptional education facility for the community of South Hackney.’

The proposals were revised following criticism from the local authority Hackney Council’s design review panel.

Construction is planned to start on site in the autumn and the new school is expected to open in September 2014.
