Jestico + Whiles lands Norfolk academy job

[First look + project data] Jestico + Whiles has secured a contract for a major redesign of Thetford Academy in Norfolk

The architects will work with Balfour Beatty subsidiary Mansell on the predominantly new-build £18.2 million education scheme.

Currently split across two sites, the new academy will accommodate up to 2,050 pupils when it is completed in September 2013.

Plans include new sports pitches and external games areas, a public sports hall, a sixth form centre, an entrance café/reception area and an outdoor amphitheatre.

Low energy features include a biomass plant run on woodchips and a series of photovoltaic panels to convert sunlight into electricity.

Jestico + Whiles associate Alex Gordon said: ‘The design aims to upgrade the existing buildings while offering a new, multi-functional educational facility for Thetford.’
