In pictures: New community hub for Portsmouth

Househam Henderson Architects has drawn up concept plans for a new community hub in Somerstown, Portsmouth

The designs are for a building linking two communities on either side of Winston Churchill Avenue, which is part of the first phase of Portsmouth City Council’s ambitious plans to revamp the area.

The proposals include a café, information areas, a landscaped external concourse with a sunken events space and a glazed reception space with views of the city centre and Spinnaker Tower.

Launce Morgan, the council’s housing development manager, said he wants the building to become a landmark for the city.

Househam Henderson project director Tony Luck added: ‘Househam Henderson are delighted that our design for a landmark community building will be the first stage of the urban regeneration of the Somerstown neighbourhood of Portsmouth.’

Subject to council approval and funding constraints, work on the community hub may start in the third quarter of 2010.
