In pictures: Hadid, Kahn and Piano vie for Design of the Year gong

Zaha Hadid’s Galaxy Soho, Louis Kahn’s Four Freedoms Park and Renzo Piano’s Shard skyscraper are among 17 architectural projects shortlisted for the Design Museum’s prestigious Designs of the Year award

More than 90 nominations have been received for the high-profile annual awards programme which celebrates best designs from around the world in the last 12 months across seven categories.

Other architectural contenders include: Druot, Lacaton and Vassal’s La Tour Bois-le-Petre residential tower redevelopment; Egret West’s Clapham Library; Farshid Moussavi’s Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland; Hackett Hall McKnight’s Belfast Metropolitan Arts Centre; A Room for London by David Kohn; SO-IL’s Kukje Art Center; MVRDV Book Mountain library; Thalia Theatre by Gonçalo Byrne and Barbas Lopes, Witherford Watson Mann’s Astley Castle, Klein Dytham T-Site campus in Tokyo; and BIG, TOPOTEK1 and Superflex’s Superkilen park in Copenhagen.

Also shortlisted in the category are Andrés Jaque’s Ikea Disobedients architectural performance; a book titled Museum of Innocence by Orhan Pamuk with Ihsan Bilgin, Cem Yucel and Gregor Sunder Plassmann; and a Venice Biennale installation by Akihisa Hirata, Sou Fujimoto, Kumiko Inui and Toyo Ito exploring post-earthquake housing in Japan.

Microsoft’s Windows phone 8, Thomas Heatherwick’s Olympic Couldron and the website meanwhile feature among nominations in the Digital, Fashion, Furniture, Graphics, Product and Transport categories.

The exhibition opens on Wednesday 20 March and closes 7 July.  The winners will be revealed on 17 April.
