In Pictures: Beijing's water cube legacy
The 2008 Beijing Olympics Aquatics Centre has been turned into Asia’s largest indoor water park
Designed by Arup and PTW Architects, the iconic bubble-wrap building is now home to the Bullet Bowl, Speed Slide, Aqualoop and Ridehouse, as well as a series of themed pools.
The cube’s 11,000m² interior was transformed by Toronto-based planning and design firm Forrec. Anthony Van Dam, vice-president at Forrec, said: ‘The brief from the client was simply to develop a world class concept, in keeping with the stature of the building and drawing from the ethereal quality of the interior environment.‘
Now called the Happy Magic Watercube the park opened to the public on 8 August, the two-year anniversary of the start of the Beijing games.
During the 2008 Olympics the aquatics centre hosted the swimming and diving events, where 25 world records were broken.
