In pictures: AS+GG to design world’s tallest tower

[First look] Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG) has confirmed its appointment to design the world’s tallest skyscraper in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Called Kingdom Tower, the structure is planned to be 173 metres taller than Dubai’s Burj Khalifa which is currently the tallest building on the planet and was also designed by AS+GG partner Adrian Smith when he worked at SOM.

The 530,000m² skyscraper is planned as the centrepiece of Jeddah’s $20 billion Kingdom City master plan project which is set to occupy a 5.3 million m² site in the north of the city.

AS+GG beat SOM, Pickard Chilton, Kohn Pedersen Fox, Pelli Clarke Pelli and Foster + Partners to win the job.

Smith said: ‘This tower…demonstrates the strength and creative vision of its people. It represents new growth and high-performance technology fused into one powerful iconic form.’

The $1.2 billion tower will feature a hotel, serviced apartments, offices, condominiums and an observatory.
