In pictures: 2011 RIBA Awards winners

The AJ can exclusively reveal this year’s 89 RIBA UK award winners, nearly a third of which are education projects

In a rebuff to anti-architect and anti-design education secretary Michael Gove, the institute has handed awards to 30 educationrelated schemes, including nine
schools and two academies.

Considered by region, Welsh practices turned in a strong performance again, bagging seven awards for the second year in a row, while the East notched an impressive eight accolades. Northern Ireland won just two awards.

Together with the eight European award-winners, these projects will now go forward for consideration for this year’s Stirling Prize,
which will be presented at a gala event at Magna in Rotherham, Sheffield on Saturday, 1 October.
