Ian Simpson wins contest for Granada Studios overhaul

Ian Simpson Architecture has won the competition to redevelop the iconic Granada Studios in Manchester

The local architect defeated 10 rival practices including BDP, Fielden Clegg Bradley and John McAslan to land the prestigious 370,000m² city centre regeneration job.

EPR, Conran & Partners, Gensler, Child Graddon Lewis, Sheppard Robson, Bennetts Associates and Broadway Malyan were also vying to masterplan the 5.5 hectare riverfront plot.

Around 3,000 new homes are expected to be built on the former broadcasting site which is less than 500 metres from Simpson’s landmark Beetham Tower.

Developer Allied London – the driving force behind Manchester’s £1.5 billion Spinningfields regeneration where Simpson is already working (AJ 09.05.14) – paid £26.5 million for the site which had been the headquarters of ITV Granada from 1956 until last year.

Planned to start on site in 2015, the redevelopment – dubbed St John’s quarter – will also feature 46,000m² of workspace, 37,000m² of leisure space, two hotels and two cultural buildings. The indicative masterplan includes a number of high-rise towers.

Ralph Tubb’s unlisted Granada Studios building and the historic Bonded Warehouse will remain but the world-famous Coronation Street set will be demolished.

The revamp of the Victorian, 12,000m² Bonded Warehouse is being overseen by BuckleyGrayYeoman. Due to finish in Spring 2016, the project includes new ground-floor shops below ‘flexible’ office space and features an additional, glazed lantern-like storey on the roof.
