Ian Simpson unwraps Newcastle business school

[First look] Ian Simpson Architects has completed this Business School for Newcastle University - the first phase of its £100 million Downing Plaza masterplan for developer Downing

The first phase of its £100 million Downing Plaza masterplan for developer Downing, the 10,000m² scheme is part of a wider redevelopment of the former Scottish and Newcastle brewery site and forms the gateway to Newcastle City Council’s proposed Science Central masterplan being designed by Make (AJ 03.02.11).

A second phase which includes a 520-bedroom student village and 800m² of shops and is due to finish later this summer. Meanwhile construction on the phase three new student accommodation facility, which will house a further 351 student bedrooms, is due to start in spring 2011. There is also planning permission is also in place for a 285-bedroom hotel. 

Rachel Haugh, principal director at Ian Simpson Architects said: ‘The building provides cost effective, high quality space benefitting from generous natural light and expansive views across the city. Its strength of form, robust materials and crisp detailing contribute significantly to both the local context and the city’s skyline.

‘Our aim throughout the development of the project was to achieve more with less, with a simple rational and flexible approach.’
