Ian Ritchie's Fitzrovia science centre to start on site

[First look] Ian Ritchie Architects’ £70 million Sainsbury Wellcome Centre at University College London will start on site later this month following the signing of contracts with Kier Construction

Aimed to complete in 2014, the centre – located on the corner of Howland Street and Charlotte Street in London’s Fitzrovia – will study how the brain processes information and drives behaviour.

Professor John O’Keefe, interim director of the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre, said: ‘This important milestone will see the building project moving from design phase to implementation.

‘We look forward to the new building going up and are confident that, when completed, it will provide a world-class facility for neuroscientists from UCL and from around the UK.’

The scheme replaces the university’s 1960s Windeyer Building which has now been demolished.
