Howells to plan for new Birmingham rail station

Glenn Howells Architects has been appointed to outline what effect a high-speed rail route through Birmingham would have on development plans for the city

Birmingham City Council hired the firm after it was announced in March that the rail route would be built with a station in Eastside.

The council had already earmarked the area for major regeneration, with plans for a new university campus, park and housing developments.

Both Patel Taylor’s £12 million City Park, which came in for criticism from CABE earlier this year, and BDP’s Birmingham University plans could be impacted by the £28 billion railway, which will connect London to Liverpool and York.

Although there is a chance the rail route will not go ahead now that a new Government is in power, a spokesman for the city council said this was unlikely.

He said: ‘The route might not be built for 20 years, so we want to know what parts of our plans we can progress without having to wait that long.’
