Home for a journalist in Notting Hill, London, by Powell Tuck

Construction work has started on this 325m2 house by Powell Tuck Associates on Walmer Road in Notting Hill, London.

Built from reclaimed red London stock brick, the home for a journalist and her family replaces a former chapel of rest which had been used as a boxing club.

A third of the three-bedroom building has been sunk below ground due to make best use of the ‘tight site’ and to counter other restrictions from neighbouring properties

A spokesman for the practice said: ‘As the site was considered very sensitive, our planning strategy was to gain permissions in stages, first for the chapel’s change of use, then its extension, and finally for its demolition, and replacement with a new building.’
The scheme is due to complete in 2011.
