Hodder + Partners has bagged planning permission for a 330-room hotel opposite Piccadilly Station and the Grade II* listed Fire Station
The RIBA president elect’s practice won the £20 million scheme, backed by developer Olympian Homes, after a contest earlier this year (see below).
Olympian has an ‘agreement to lease’ with the German hotel operator Motel One for its first ‘design oriented’ hotel in England.
The project will start on site will in January 2013.

Hodder wins contest for new Manchester hotel
Hodder + Partners has won an invited competition to design a 330-room hotel for a site opposite Piccadilly Station and the Grade II* listed Fire Station in Manchester
The practice saw off bids from Ian Simpson Architects, Mark Weintraub Architecture & Design and Hattrell DS One to land the prize scheme, the latest development in a growing cluster of hotels around the station.Hodder recently won permission for the proposed £35 million redevelopment of Richard Seifert’s 1965 Gateway House next to Piccadilly Station which also includes a 270-room hotel.
Due to be submitted for planning by the end of the month (February 2012), the latest competition-winning scheme is backed by London-based developers Olympian Group which is delivering the project German operator, Motel One.
According to the practice its victorious design makes the ‘transition from the intensity and scale of Argent’s Piccadilly Place with that of the Fire Station - a calm foil to the exuberance of the latter.’
Subject to planning approval work could begin on in September.
The scheme will see The Twisted Wheel site (now Legends club), the former home of Northern Soul in the city, flattened.
