HKR reveals new Ancoats masterplan
[FIRST LOOK] HKR Architects has released these images of its proposed mixed-use office and hotel development on Great Ancoats Street and Pollard Street in east Manchester.
The scheme has been submitted for a hybrid planning application – part detailed for the hotel and office and part outline for a second commercial phase – and is expected to go before the planning committee next week (14 January 2010).
Sitting next to Islington Wharf, New Islington and the Albion Works developments, the masterplan has been described by the practice as offering ‘the potential to engage with these areas and in-fill what is a fragmented edge of the city fringe’.
The design of the Pollard Street scheme has, says HKR, been heavily influenced by the surrounding remnants of ‘Cottonopolis’, the industrial past of Ancoats and Manchester.
The practice said: ‘Material influences are drawn from cotton weaving and the Industrial vernacular of the local Mills and cotton warehouses, seeking to provide a scheme firmly rooted in its locale but provide a modern interpretation, which enhances and complements the existing context of Albion Works and New Islington in the creation of a legible and consistent approach.’
