Heneghan Peng down to last three in major Moscow contest

Heneghan Peng has been shortlisted in the competition to design the new £73 million National Centre for Contemporary Arts (NCCA) in Moscow

The 2013 Stirling Prize-finalist is vying for the huge art gallery commission against local Russian practice MEL and Madrid’s Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos.

Organised by the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design, the contest attracted more than 900 entries, including submissions from Zaha Hadid, OMA, Shigeru Ban Architects, Kengo Kuma & Associates and Morphosis Architects.

The gallery, which is scheduled to start on site next year and take up to three years to build, is expected to welcome 500,000 people a year and will be a flagship scheme within the regeneration of Khodynskoe Pole.

The competition has been backed by the Russian Federation Ministry of Culture, the City of Moscow Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning and the Union of Moscow Architects.

A winner could be announced before the end of the year.

Denis Leontyev, general director of KB Strelka, said: ‘The competition for the new NCCA is a striving to look at a city, at a combination of functions and architectural forms, in a contemporary spirit.

‘As an example, take the Guggenheim-Hermitage space created by Rem Koolhaas in Las Vegas, positioned in one complex with a hotel and casino.’

He added: ‘It is crucial to understand that Khodynskoe Pole, the site of the future museum, is a location for new development of considerable scale.  Simultaneous with the NCCA museum and exhibition complex, a new shopping centre, park, hotel, residential and office buildings are being planned.

‘A hybrid environment will result, where the most varied functions mix – cultural, commercial and residential.  Such close proximity often acts as the catalyst for the appearance of striking and bold architecture.’
