New contest: Manchester’s Whitworth Gallery extension and revamp (15 June 2009)

The RIBA has launched a competition for an internal overhaul and extension to the Grade-II listed Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester

Contest backers, the Friends of the Whitworth, want to build an addition to the South-west facing side of the gallery, overlooking Whitworth Park, and to expand the display space, improve facilities for visitors and ‘improve the efficiency of the existing building’.

The winning proposal will form the first stage of a Heritage Lottery Fund bid.

Initial application will be by expression of interest – due 2.00pm on Wednesday 15 July 2009 – from which a shortlist of five practices will be asked to produce concept designs. Each of the finalists will receive an honorarium of £5,000.
