Grimshaw has beaten an all-British shortlist to win top-secret Russian project, location unknown
The London-based studio beat an all-British shortlist of four to win the competition run by Halcrow, the project’s planning and design consultant.
Fellow Londoners Leit-Werk took second place, while transport specialists Pascall + Watson came in joint third with an Airport Design Consult and Areen team.

Grimshaw’s design features a ‘grand axial route’ with a plaza at the heart of the terminal (below) and hospitality facilities inspired by a ‘traditional English gentleman’s club’ suspended above.
According to Grimshaw, the design reconnects ‘the modern airport terminal with the original spirit of aviation’.
The practice was chosen to design St Petersburg’s new €450 million Pulkovo Airport in November last year, making this win its second airport project in Russia in quick succession.
