Green shoots: Fees increase at top practices

Atkins, which led last year’s AJ100 list of Britain’s biggest practices, saw its fees earned from UK offices top £85 million, up 24 per cent on 2008’s figure of £69 million.

A spokesman for Atkins said: ‘The figures reflect a successful period for Atkins’ architectural business, especially in non-UK income, which doubled from the previous year to £73 million.

‘The Middle East region recorded strong growth, though, as stated in our results, trading conditions worsened in the second half of the year.’

Meanwhile, fellow top 10 practice Aedas also defied the cost-cutting felt across the industry, reporting total fees of £54 million from work carried out in its UK offices.

The London-based international firm also saw its fees earned per architect increase from £201,000 to £260,000.

Brian Johnson, chairman of the practice, admitted the firm is ‘leaner and fitter’, with the total number of architects up while overall staff numbers have decreased.

Archial, which earlier this year revealed it was on the hunt for acquisitions, also saw an increase in fees earned per architect, up to £172,000 from £166,000.

This year’s AJ100 will be published next week (AJ 20.05.10).
