Graduates win design competition at Riverside One site

Three architecture graduates have won a competition to design a timber hut which will be built at the former Middlehaven docks, site of the £200 million Riverside One development in Middlesbrough

The competition was the idea of Will Alsop, who designed the Riverside One masterplan, and run by Northern Architecture, the architecture centre for the North East of England.

Graduates Adam Dalby, Jamie Nicholson and Paul Hegarty entered as team ArchiGrad and won the £1000 first prize with an entry which judges said was ‘innovative and plausible’ and could be adapted to all the proposed uses including a miniature theatre, coffee bar, bike shelter and beach hut.

Judges included representatives from BioRegional Quintain, Northern Architecture and Middlesbrough Council. Entrants were all under 34 and architects or designers based in the North East.

BioRegional Quintain managing director, Pete Halsall, said: ‘Our idea was to create the opportunity for younger designers and entrepreneurs from the region to forward their ideas to create buzz, animation and liveliness at Middlehaven through the timber huts.’
