Government to unveil nuclear fast-track plans
Plans for fast-tracking a new fleet of nuclear reactors is to be announced by the government today
Energy secretary Ed Miliband will unveil national policy statements to be used for future decisions on infrastructure development, including a list of potential sites for new nuclear power stations.
Earlier this month the Infrastructure Planning Commission revealed it would look at two of EDF’s plans for Sizewell C and Hinckley Point C.
But EDF, the owner of a number of the new nuclear sites, admitted that appointing architects to the streamlined project was a long way off. A spokesman said: ‘EDF Energy can confirm that earlier this year YRM were awarded a contract for in relation to the architectural vision for our project at Hinkley Point.
‘We are still finalising the procurement strategy in relation to other elements of the project, so at this stage we can not provide any further details.’
Mr Miliband said that the proposals were crucial for the shape of Britain’s future energy supply and that the government will ensure that firms will have to work closely with local regions and show they have consulted widely in order to gain approval.
