Goodbye Alsop, hello Careyjones in Salford

[First look] Careyjones chapmantolcher has submitted this plans for a 1,091 student bedroom development in Salford once earmarked for a 26-storey tower by Will Alsop

Four years ago (AJ 27.02.07) Alsop won approval for a £40 million mixed-use development on the Adelphi Street site at the ‘gateway’ to the New Chapel Street regeneration area for Vermont Developments. The outfit went into administration in August 2008 and the scheme shelved.

Last week student homes specialists Manor Property Group submitted a new planning application for a large-riverside development on the plot - now known as Manor Wharf- which includes office units, a gym, café, car parking and landscaping.

Manor Property Group spokesman Bill Addy said: ‘Manor will be regenerating an area of Salford which has seen many years of decline and we are looking forward to working with the planners to enable start on site later this summer in order to meet growing demand for occupancy from September 2013.’

It is understood the tallest element of the new scheme will be 18-storeys.

  • Oh Dear!
The Alsop scheme was just daft.
This one looks like a 1st year student has done it.

    Unsuitable or offensive?

  • Alosp's looks mad and meaningless but may look quite stunning when it's sunny.
Careyjones' is meaningless dull but seems to suit devceloper's pocket.
If Alsop's can be done by a 1st year student then Careyjones' can be done by everyone dare to design.

    Unsuitable or offensive?

  • I think the first comment refers to the Carey Jones scheme being designed by a 1st year student not the Alsop one.
But that said - all Alsop designs look like fist year projects.

    Unsuitable or offensive?
