Gaudi on track for sainthood

The Pope’s consecration of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona this weekend has raised campaigners’ hopes Antoni Gaudi could be the first architect to achieve a sainthood

The late Gaudi’s cathedral project (pictured) features a 140 metre-tall central spire and has been in construction for the past 130 years. Completion is expected in 2026.

On Sunday the Pope will host the building’s first mass and is expected to praise the architect, placing him on track for sainthood.

The Association for the Beatification of Gaudi hope’s the architect, who died in 1926, will be beatified on 10 June 2016.

The association’s 80,000 members have spent the past 27 years campaigning for the Vatican’s recognition of the designer.
