Foster’s Croydon and Marks Barfield’s Brighton schemes win slice of £14m handout
Foster and Partners’ Ruskin Square scheme in Croydon and Marks Barfield Architects’ i360 in Brighton are among five schemes allocated funds worth £14.4 million in total by local enterprise partnership Coast to Capital
The funding for the two high-profile projects has been rewarded as part of a £500 million government initiative to boost economic growth and create jobs.
Foster and Partners’ Ruskin Square masterplan for developers Stanhope and Schroders will receive £4 million. The mixed-use project features 93,000m² of office space and 550 Allford Hall Monaghan Morris-designed homes.
The masterplan features a pedestrian bridge which is planned to cross a railway line adjactent to the 3.7 hectare site.
Ian Mason of Schroders and David Camp of Stanhope said: ‘Ruskin Square is the centerpiece of East Croydon’s transformation into a new central business district. This welcome injection of funding will unlock a first phase of housing at Ruskin Square and a new direct route, to be used by 20,000 people, through the site connecting the Station with the town centre by 2013.’
Marks Barfield Architects 150 metre-tall i-360 viewing platform on Brighton’s sea front will receive £3 million.
Funds were also allocated to the employment-led redevelopment of Lec Airfield in Bognor Regis, new super-fast broadband in Caterham and the overhaul of Lewes’ Malling Brooks.

‘The variety of projects also demonstrates the willingness and intent of the Board to consider all options when looking for ways to create long-term high quality sustainable jobs. The iconic Brighton i360 that will further strengthen Brighton’s international reputation and Ruskin Square, Croydon that will be a catalyst for significant investment within the Borough.
