Foster unwraps Abu Dhabi souk

[FIRST LOOK] Foster + Partners has completed the first part of its Central Market scheme in Abu Dhabi - this ‘alternative’shopping mall based on a traditional Arabian souk

The 600,000m² mixed-use scheme, described as the United Arab Emirates capital’s ‘new civic heart’, features squares, courtyards and alley ways lit with ‘dappled’ sunlight and ‘vibrant colours’.

Rising up to 380 metres above the souk are three mixed-use skyscrapers – currently under construction – which look out over the shopping centre’s rooftop terraced gardens.

The tower’s ‘smooth reflective’ facades also help to reduce the need for maintenance in the dusty desert environment. The design features solar collectors and can be naturally ventilated during parts of the year, however in the hottest conditions the structure can be air conditioned.
