Foster + Partners reveals Thames Estuary airport plans

Foster + Partners has produced plans for the world’s biggest airport to be built in the Thames Estuary

The practice has self-funded a £100,000 study with infrastructure consultants Halcrow to show how a major infrastructure hub in east London could replace Heathrow airport.

Under the proposals, the airport would handle up to 150 million passengers a year and benefit from links to the proposed high speed rail network and improved access by road. The plans also include a Thames Barrier replacement which would generate tidal power.

Norman Foster said: ‘This move would greatly improve the quality of life for Londoners by reducing pollution and improving security. It would also allow London to compete with rapidly expanding airports in Europe and the Middle East.’

Plans for an airport in the Thames Estuary have been floated for several years but have never been confirmed. London mayor Boris Johnson is a keen supporter of the idea but last year prime minister David Cameron denied any plans for such a facility.

  • When is someone going to tell the truth in this country.

  • Don't I recollect previous proposals (for Maplin Sands, I think) being criticised for ignoring the greater risk of fog causing flight delays in the Thames estuary area, compared with Heathrow?
    - or have technological advances rendered this no longer a problem?

  • I would suggest anyone considering these proposals should look at the following website:
