Forgotten Spaces: finalists in RIBA North West region revealed

AJ exclusive: The Judges have made their selection of 22 finalists in the North West section of the RIBA’s nationwide competition aimed at revitalising disused sites

Run in association with the AJ, the contest is the latest in the series of ideas competitions which began in 2010, aimed at reviving disused or overlooked sites.

Six ‘forgotten’ plots in Preston were suggested by a council-led steering group – although entrants could suggest their own – and the submitted schemes ranged from revitalising run-down back streets with replica Lightning fighter aircraft wings to a new floating market on the Lancaster canal.

The contest attracted an impressive 57 entries from teams of students, artists, designers, planners and architects. The winner, who will receive a £5,000 prize, will be announced in early November. A £2,000 second prize and £1,000 third place award will be offered.

All the shortlisted schemes will go on display at a special exhibition sponsored by Ibstock in Preston in November.

The judge panel was chaired by RIBA president elect Stephen Hodder and included Bob Allies of Allies and Morrison, architect Alex McCrickard of the Eric Wright Group, Charlotte Myhrum, the design review manager at Places Matter!, Susie Stubbs, from Creative Tourist and AJ news editor Richard Waite.

The North West contest was sponsored by the Eric Wright Group, Booths and Lancashire County Council, and supported by the University of Central Lancashire and Preston City Council.

Finalists in the RIBA London Forgotten Spaces contest will be revealed next week.
