[First look + plans + project data] Flanagan Lawrence has cut the ribbon on its competition-winning seafront shelter and performance space in Littlehampton
The outfit – formerly known as BFLS – defeated a raft of practices including NEX, Ian McChesney and Asif Khan to win the £100,000 project two years ago.
The 20m² structure for Littlehampton Town Council opened last month and features two curved, sprayed concrete shells each facing opposite directions.
The first shell overlooks a sunken garden and will be used as a bandstand. Its acoustic design creates a reflective surface to project sound towards audiences in the green space.
The second shell faces the coast and will be used as a shelter where visitors can listen to the sea. Buskers may also perform in the promenade-facing shelter.
According to a statement from the practice: ‘The two shells appear like white land forms emerging from the grass of the local greensward.
‘This reflects the historical context of the concrete sound mirrors along the south coast at Dungeness, and the visually striking form of the local sand dunes.’
When the contest winner was announced shortlisted architects criticised the local authority for choosing what was deemed to be a ‘standard product’ as the winner.
Finalists highlighted the similarity between then-named BFLS’s victorious scheme and the temporary performance venue launched in March 2012 by the firm’s Soundforms joint venture with Arup Acoustics, ES Global and IMG Artists.
