[FIRST LOOK + PROJECT DATA] These are the first images of Huddersfield-based practice One 17’s proposals for a new house in a former quarry
Construction work is about to start on the 3,250m² home, known as Five winds, which sits on green belt land and on the edge of a conservation area in the village of South Crosland in West Yorkshire.
The practice had already won approval for a major extension to an existing house on the site - known as Four Winds - but during clearance of undergrowth on a steeply sloping part of the plot the firm stumbled across a small former quarry, scooped out of the hillside.
According to practice partner Mark Lee this south-facing bowl, with views over the adjacent valley,’ provided a unique opportunity to develop a genuinely contemporary design’.
He said: ‘The idea for the design came to me as soon as I saw the site. Access is from the top level, but all you see here is an entrance pod as you approach. The design has been carefully integrated with the adjacent house so that the planted roof of the new building looks like an extension of the terrace garden of the former.’
Commenting on the planning process, Lee added: ‘We worked hard at developing a productive relationship with Kirklees’ planning department and it has certainly paid off in this case.
‘Once we explained the rationale behind the scheme and showed the minimal visual impact it would have – only very long range views are available from outside the site – officers were very supportive.’
