First look: RMJM Sport's world debut in China

RMJM has won the competition to design a 20,000 sq m community sports complex in Dalian, China.

The scheme in the Liaoning Province is the first project win for the company under the banner of its new global sports studio, RMJM Sport.

Featuring a ‘floating super-sports floor’, the centre will house areas for martial arts, basketball, volley ball, table tennis, badminton, fencing, gymnastics, fitness as well as a 50m swimming pool.

RMJM design principal, John Pauline, said: ‘We wanted to design a socially and environmentally forward-thinking iconic building that would work hard to serve the local community in Dalian.

‘The design pulls the building completely off the ground suspending a large public plaza in the resulting void. One of the design’s main aims was to create a building that enhances and blends with the city’s existing network of gardens and plaza spaces.’

According to the practice the inspiration for the building’s skin ‘came from the elongated texture of muscle tissue and the Winter pear Chinese screen wall pattern’.

The centre is due to complete late 2010.
