First look: Leeds’ Granary Wharf takes two steps towards completion

Work is nearing completion on this three-building development next to Leeds station, featuring schemes by CZWG, Allies and Morrison and Carey Jones.

Sitting next to the canal and the River Aire, the 2.7ha Granary Wharf project has been developed by ISIS Waterside Regeneration. It will be linked to the station through a new gateway designed by Bauman Lyons Architects.

Although Carey Jones’ cylindrical Candle House is yet to finish, Allies & Morrison’s red brick City Inn hotel has opened its doors and CZWG’s brick, copper-and timber-clad 122-flat Waterman Place has also launched.

CZWG’s building features a ground floor of commercial units and is described by the practice as ‘an eroded geological mass surmounted by a ‘hill town’ of stepping blocks, and riven by a seam of polished copper’ which responds to the canal-side lcoation with it ‘indigenous brick walls [that are] deeply punctured by repetitive windows’ and timber cladding which will weather ‘to a warm beige-grey’.
