First look: Darling wins go-ahead for Soho showstopper
Darling Associates has bagged permission for the mixed-use redevelopment of the Quadrangle building in Wardour Street and Oxford Street, central London
The proposals for the block close to the heart of Soho will retain the historic Bannister Fletcher-designed Oxford Street façade and add two additional residential floors featuring a vertical garden and terracing.
Below the rooftop luxury apartments, the 12 000m² scheme includes ‘high spec’ offices and shops.
Consturction work is due to start in the spring of 2013.
The architect’s view
[Our] response to the site was described as ‘exciting’ and ‘dramatic’ by the Westminster Planning Committee members who unanimously approved the scheme. It answered the challenges posed by a tight urban site, whilst balancing client aspirations with the views and considerations of local residents, community groups, and the Planning Authority.
The committee members particularly supported the creation of a contemporary corner entrance at the junction of Wardour Street and Hollen Street, which it was felt responded to the grid plan arrangements of the surrounding streets.
The listed facades are to be retained and improved whilst the entrances and reception areas rationalised in a more generous and logical layout and a new internal core will better serve the different users of the building.
As part of the general improvement to common areas, the lightwell serves as a focus at the heart of the scheme, with new glazed facade to the courtyards rising to the rooftop allowing light into the building.
