Farrells to re-examine Vauxhall Cross gyratory

Terry Farrell and Partners has been appointed by Lambeth Council to work on a strategy for the future of Vauxhall Cross road interchange in south London

The company has been asked investigate whether the area – plagued by heavy road traffic on a ‘gyratory’ road system – should be considered a centre or an interchange, according to reports in local media.

The findings of the three-month study could be used to inform council policy however a spokesperson for local authority Lambeth Council insisted that Farrells would not be making any final decisions about the area’s future.

The authority said: ‘Farrell’s brief is to facilitate discussions and take forward the visions of the different interested groups - by working closely with councillors, council officers, the local community, and landowners.

‘We are keen to make sure that the right development for the area is developed, and close and integrated working with all groups is at the heart of this brief.’

A £20 million Vauxhall skywalk project – linked to a developer CLS Holdings’ Allies and Morrison-masterplanned proposal to build two skyscrapers nearby – was shelved in June but Marks Barfield has been appointed to draw up plans for an alternative street-level scheme in the area. A planning application for the 40-storey scheme is expected to be submitted in December.

CLS Holdings chief executive Richard Tice said: ‘We welcome the efforts of Farrells on behalf of Lambeth Council and look forward to sharing our thoughts and working with them.

‘CLS Holdings, as a substantial landowner in Vauxhall has consistently highlighted the need for public realm improvements and a new heart to Vauxhall; it has been employing the services of Marks Barfield,  the well known, local  architects and Arups the engineers to help it work together with stakeholders such as Lambeth Council and TfL on potential solutions to the challenges at Vauxhall Cross.’

  • The Skywalk proposal is a 21st century idea which would resolve an otherwise intractable problem, and form part of a real route between Battersea Power Station and Waterloo. It shouldn't be written out of the script just yet.

  • The entire area is fundamentally flawed, and while i applaud an effort to correct the skywalk idea is about at 21st century as the planet of the apes movies. The only way this will be resolved is if the three major land owners: CLS, Kylun and vauxhall towers agree to work together instead of engaging in this farcical game of "mine is the centrepiece"
