Extension to Foster + Partners' Sage Centre scrapped

Gateshead Council has abandoned plans for a £30million extension to Foster + Partners’ Sage arts complex

The project would have seen a new 3,000m2 conference centre developed underneath the car park of Sage Gateshead, part of a long-term plan to develop the quayside area and to grow the conferencing, exhibition and live performance potential of the site.

The decision follows a review of the project which found that financing the construction of the construction centre would outweigh the benefits provided by the new facilities.

Mick Henry, leader of Gateshead Council said: ‘We have to be realistic, that in the current economic climate it would not be prudent to go ahead with this project at this time.’

He added: ‘While disappointed, we believe this is the right decision… Our shared vision remains and I’m confident it will be realised in the future.’
