Exclusive images from Europe's tallest residential tower
These are the first images from the top of Broadway Malyan’s under-construction One St George Wharf tower, in Vauxhall, London
Sat south of the Thames next to the much-maligned St George Wharf housing project, which was also completed by the practice for developer St George, the 180m-tall skyscraper is set to become London’s tallest residential-only building.
Each typical floor of the 50-storey building will be divided into five apartments with separating walls radiating out from the central core so that every flat has views across the capital.
Dubbed ‘the battery’, the cylindrical tower started on site in March 2010 and is scheduled for completion in June 2013.
The architect’s view
Peter Crossley, Director at global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan, said: ‘The Tower is an elegant and timelessly classic piece of design. It is exceptionally sustainable and will act as a catalyst to regeneration in the surrounding neighbourhood.
We expect that it will quickly become a familiar and friendly landmark to Londoners and visitors alike, following in the footsteps of other buildings of similar scale and mass.
Our detailed studies have shown that this is the right building for this location and, due to its small footprint and visually subtle circular plan form, The Tower will have exceptionally slender pencil-like proportions when viewed from any direction.’
