Exclusive: CF Møller wins delayed hospital contest

Danish-based practice picked to design in-patient facilities in Wandsworth after planning inspector overturns council rejection of wider masterplan

CF Møller UK has finally been named the winner in the RIBA contest to design in-patient facilities for South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust (SWLSTG).

The shortlist for the project, which included Allies and Morrison, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Henley Halebrown Rorrison, AHMM, David Morley Architects with Anshen + Allen Architects, Penoyre & Prasad with Patel Taylor, and Reiach & Hall with Atkins, was unveiled almost a year ago (AJ 22.09.11).

But the competition for a ‘new generation of in-patient mental health facilities’ was put on hold while the planning inspector looked at the controversial £300 million Patel Taylor masterplan for the wider site, known as Springfield Hospital.

Wandsworth Council had originally rejected the scheme, comprising 839 homes and 3,700m² of shops and offices around the new hospital, despite it being recommended for approval by planning officers (AJ 08.12.10). The council said it would ‘put too much strain on the local transport network and result in an unacceptable loss of open land’.

But last month the planning inspector went against the local authority’s decision and nearly 4,000 letters of objection and approved the scheme, paving the way for the hospital competition to restart.

John Jenner, of Greenhill Jenner Architects and RIBA adviser for the competition said: ‘Danish design is thriving in an ever wider number of fields and Møller will bring its considerable track record and experience of designing high quality health environments to this very important project.’

Robert Barr, director of estates at (SWLSTG) said: ‘We’re delighted that CF Møller have won this hard fought RIBA competition. Their designs show innovation and quality of the highest standard. There were a number of outstanding architects who participated in the competition and we would like to thank everyone who took the time to submit proposals.
‘The Trust is excited at the opportunity to work with CF Møller to redevelop the Victorian Springfield Hospital site into a modern mental health facility, bringing exception design and innovative sustainability that will fit the needs of our patients, carers, service users and staff.’
